Necessity breeds invention, they say, and invent you must, for your rocket has run out of fuel, leaving you stranded on an alien planet! But you are not afraid, as you possess the knowledge of basic physics and aerodynamics. Presenting the event Liftoff, where you must design a rocket with water as propellant and blast off into space!
Design and Build a water rocket which can be launched at any angle with respect to the horizontal. The teams will be participating in two rounds and the winners will be decided on the basis of rules given below.
A very prominent event hosted on Facebook inspired from Astronomy Pictures of the Day(A.P.O.D.) of NASA. This event is open for amateur photographers from all over the country who love to capture the elegance of the night sky. Under the blanket of beautiful stars, we all witness the exquisite beauty of universe which hides boundless mysteries underneath. To provide a platform to all amateur photographers across the nation to showcase their photography skills, NSSC'17 presents ASTOPHOTOGRAPHY. Winning photos will also be displayed in an exhibition in NSSC'17.
Amateur Astrophotography is a photography competition , so by entering you agree to the following competition rules.
The Amateur Astrophotography Competition is organized by Space Technology Students' Society, IIT Kharagpur.
Entries to the Amateur Astrophotography Competition 2017 competition open on 20th June 2017 and must be received by 10 August 2017.
i. Entrants must belong to the age-group of 15-25. Entrants may submit up to five separate entries to the Amateur Astrophotography Competition 2017.
ii. By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to the competition Rules, and warrants that they have secured the permission of the copyright owner (if not themselves) to enter the image into the competition.
iii. By submitting photos to the competition you confirm that the photo:
a. Was taken and processed by you, or by a group of which you are an active participant
b. Is your or your group's original work, or
c. Does not infringe the copyright or any other rights of any third party (particularly in relation to the use of robotic telescopes)
d. Does not contain any obscene or defamatory content or material
iv. Digitally enhanced, composites are eligible for entry to the competition, but original Photos must be attached with the entry. The judging panel may ask about your processing method if your photo is shortlisted for a prize.
v. If the Image is not digitally enhanced, participant has to upload the same image twice in both categories, viz. Original Image and Entry Image.
vi. The following images are not eligible for entry to the Amateur Astrophotography Competition:
a. Photos that have previously been submitted to a news/picture agency for distribution.
b. Photos taken more than two years before the competition's closing date (i.e. taken before 20th June 2015).
i. To make sure that your photos are eligible for the competition shortlist, please ensure:
a. you have completed the relevant online application form
b. you have a high-resolution version (atleast 1080p) of your photo available. This is to ensure that your image can be reproduced in the exhibition and for promotional purposes, should it be awarded a prize.
ii. If your photo is shortlisted, we will contact you via the email address you provided on the online entry form and ask you to:
a. Supply a high resolution version of your photo. This must be exactly the same image as the one originally entered, albeit a larger version. No retouching or altering of the image is permitted after the image has been shortlisted.
b. supply any missing information about your image, if needed.
c. Declare if your photo has been digitally manipulated and, if so, supply details of the processing method. Digitally manipulated photos are eligible but the judging panel will want to take your process into consideration when choosing winning photos.
i. Space Technology Students Society is dedicated to supporting public understanding and education of science. The images submitted to the Amateur Astrophotography Competition serve as key resources to promote astronomy photography in practice and in order for us to do this we need to be able to use your image(s) in certain ways.
ii. Entrants will retain copyright and moral rights in their submitted images. In all instances, the copyright holder will be credited, wherever practicable, when the image is used and published by spAts. We will use your first and last name as supplied during the entry process. Although spAts will always supply the correct information to third parties (for example to press / media), it cannot accept responsibility for any credit line errors or omissions by these parties.
iii. By entering, all entrants grant spAts a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free right to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, and publish in perpetuity, each image entered into the competition:
a. in exhibition displays, in relation to both the Amateur Astrophotography Competition 2017 and exhibition and related future exhibitions and displays.
b. in promotional, press and marketing materials to promote and publicize the 2017 competition and exhibition, as well as future related exhibitions, and more generally to promote the understanding of astronomy in general terms as spAts sees fit
c. in spAts publications about the Amateur Astrophotography Competition 2017 competition and exhibition and future related exhibitions.
iv. Please do not submit your contribution to the competition if you do not wish to grant these rights to spAts.
i. Total prizes worth INR 10,000/- at stake.
ii. There will be 3 Prizes. Winner, 1st runner up and 2nd runner up.
iii. Consolation Prizes will be given to entries with Maximum likes, shares and most appreciated Photo in comments.
iv. Winners get free entry in NSSC '17.
v. Top 25 Images will be displayed in exhibition hosted by spAts in NSSC '17.
vi. Winners will be announced on our Facebook Page and website in the month of August.
i. Entries will be uploaded by NSSC on our Facebook Page for Judging.
ii. Space Technology Students Society will be the Judging Panel. They might appoint a panel not related spAts to judge the entries.
iii. Judging will be based on technical skills, artistic merit and originality.
iv. Decision of Space Technology Students Society will be final and binding to all.
i. All entries to the competition must be submitted via the entry portal on our website will not accept images submitted by any other means.
ii. Maximum allowable image size in 5 MB.
iii. No responsibility can be accepted for entries which are lost, delayed, corrupted, damaged, misdirected or incomplete or which cannot be delivered for any technical, delivery or other reason. Proof of sending will not be accepted as proof of receipt. spAts cannot guarantee continuous, uninterrupted or secure access to the website.
iv. By submitting your photo for entry into the Amateur Astrophotography Competition 2017 and for publishing on the website, you confirm that the content of the photo is and will not be taken to be obscene, racist, pornographic, indecent, harassing, threatening or offensive.
v. SpAts reserves the right to pre-vet and/or moderate photos submitted and reserves the right to not display uploaded content to the website or remove, suspend or disable access to photos, at any time, at its sole discretion, without liability or prior notice.
spAts reserves the right to cancel the Amateur Astrophotography Competition and/or exhibition at any time owing to circumstances outside its reasonable control and where circumstances make this unavoidable, but will always use all reasonable endeavors to minimize the effect on participants to avoid undue disappointment.

Rome was not built in a day, neither was any space-craft! Introducing an event in NSSC 2017, in which aspiring Rocket Scientists can test their primitive space craft designing skills by preparing virtual models of space crafts and other space related structures.
Participant have to give an optimized CAD design of the given problem statement overnight. The exact problem statement will be released just before the event. Some component of CAD will be provided. Participant have to submit a design report on their CAD to validate their design.

The New Frontiers program is a series of space exploration missions being conducted by NASA with the purpose of researching several of the Solar System bodies, including the dwarf planet Pluto. New Frontiers was built on the innovative approach used by the Discovery and Explorer Programs of principal investigator-led missions. It is designed for medium-class missions that cannot be accomplished within the cost and time constraints of Discovery, but are not as large as Flagship-class missions. Juno is the next step in realising this program.
Juno is a NASA space probe orbiting the planet Jupiter. It was built by Lockheed Martin and is operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Juno was selected in 2005 as the next New Frontiers mission after New Horizons. The desire for Jupiter was strong in the years prior to this, but there had not been any approved missions. The spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on August 5, 2011, as part of the New Frontiers program, and entered a polar orbit of Jupiter on July 5, 2016, to begin a scientific investigation of the planet. After completing its mission, Juno will be intentionally deorbited into Jupiter's atmosphere.
Juno's mission is to measure Jupiter's composition, gravity field, magnetic field, and polar magnetosphere. It will also search for clues about how the planet formed, including whether it has a rocky core, the amount of water present within the deep atmosphere, mass distribution, and its deep winds, which can reach speeds of 618 kilometers per hour (384 mph). The spacecraft will study the lights around Jupiter's north and south poles (auroras), too. Juno is powered only by solar arrays, commonly used by satellites orbiting Earth and working in the inner Solar System, whereas radioisotope thermoelectric generators are commonly used for missions to the outer Solar System and beyond. For Juno, however, the three largest solar array wings ever deployed on a planetary probe play an integral role in stabilizing the spacecraft as well as generating power.
The year is 2035, and ISRO has devised a mission to explore the Solar System of TRAPPIST-1, which contains several earth-like planets. The principal probe that ISRO sent must visit all seven planets, but alas! it can only carry a limited amount of fuel. Depending on the orbital positions of the planets, you must devise the shortest way to explore all planets. Explore the deep reaches of space and search for the presence of extraterrestrial life in the event Colonizer!
Build an image processing robot that has to find the shortest route in terms of distance for visiting every Planet(Circle) exactly once. Video feed of the arena will be provided through an overhead camera.
There are 7 different circular planets of different colours. There would be an overhead camera which will provide video feed to the bot.
The team has to decide the starting point on their own and place the bot. After that, the bot has to find the shortest route to visit all the planets. At every stoppage(planet) the bot has to blink an LED corresponding to the colour of the planets. There should be 3 LED’s which could represent 1 to 7 in binary on the bot. Following is the LED binary code of 3bits corresponding to each color. Red[rgb(255,0,0)] : 001; Blue[rgb(0,0,255)] : 010; Green[rgb(0,255,0)] : 011; White [rgb(255,255,255)] : 100; Purple[rgb(128,0,128)] : 101; Sky Blue [rgb(135,206,235)] : 110; Yellow[rgb(255,255,0)] : 111.
There are 7 different planets(circular) of different colours and comets and asteroids(triangular obstacles). There would be an overhead camera which will provide video feed to the bot. The team has to decide the starting point on their own and place the bot. After that, the bot has to find the shortest route to visit all the planets/galaxies avoiding all the obstacles. At every stoppage(planet) the bot has to blink 3 LEDs corresponding to the Nth planet visited in binary format, e.g. 6th planet will be represented as 110.
An accident on the International Space Settlement that is in orbit around earth has rendered several areas uninhabitable, and you don't know which areas are safe for human presence. You must check each zone remotely for any harmful substance, render the area fit for human inhabitation, all from a distance. Presenting the event Firoceous, where you must engineer an autonomous robot to render the Space Settlement fit for operation!
Build a fully autonomous robot to traverse white line and capable to stop near the rooms; open the doors; detects whether a lit candle placed inside the room and extinguish that candle, if found.
The bot has to traverse the arena starting from a START point, following the white line. During run it has to detect small rooms aligned parallel to the path and has to push open the door and detect if there is lit candle inside the room which it has to extinguish.
The door will be double doors which will be hinged to the side faces of the room. Bot has to push the door to more than 30 mm inside the room, the door will open fully with a help magnetic mechanism inside the rooms.
An earth-like planet was recently discovered with water in the liquid form on the surface, and further surface exploration of the planet is required. Build a vehicle capable of traversing the wackiest terrain, navigating through obstacles and travelling on both land and water in the event Hoverpod!
The team has to build a manually controlled, wireless, hovercraft that has the capacity to move through a predefined path. The path would consist of varied terrain, having potholes, water and other kinds of terrains as specified in the arena below. The aim of the participant is to rake up the maximum points to win.

Asteroid mining is a major source of minerals in the year 2065, and your bot near asteroid B1242 is sending the mined ore through its local wormhole to the other side, which opens up near Mars. The receiving bot needs to sort the ore for magnetic and non-magnetic materials to send to their respective processing sites. Build a viable means to sustain life on earth for generations in the event Magneteer!
Build a robot capable of lifting objects having shapes such as cuboidal, pentagonal, hexagonal etc. and transferring the objects through a wall having holes with shape like that of the objects to another robot capable of classifying them into magnetic and non-magnetic ones. Two participants can control the bots at a time.
Participants would have to build two manually controlled robots that can lift an object using grippers. Both bots will be on opposite sides of the wall which is dividing the arena into two parts. In the first half of the arena objects in the shape of cuboids are present in three different colours namely Red, Blue and Yellow. Each colour has equal number of cuboids. Participants would have to pick up the objects and pass them through a wall which will contain holes present at different height. Objects must be transferred through the hole which is having the same colour as themselves. On the other side of the wall the other bot will collect the object and classify them as magnetic or non-magnetic and place them in their respective position.
In round two the shape of the objects is changed from cuboidal to hexagonal, pentagonal and triangular and so have the shapes of holes in the wall. All other rules are the same for both the rounds.

A study by the University of California, Irvine, published in the journal Physical Review Letters, has suggested there may be a fifth force of nature that could be found by the large hadron collider in Geneva. Study lead author Jonathan Feng said: "If true, it's revolutionary.
"For decades, we've known of four fundamental forces: gravitation, electromagnetism, and the strong and weak nuclear forces.
"If confirmed by further experiments, this discovery of a possible fifth force would completely change our understanding of the universe, with consequences for the unification of forces and dark matter."

It is an Arduino based Extempore Hardware Programming event in which the participants will be provided with small robotic platforms which they have to program according to the the problem statement which will be revealed to them just before the event starts.
The participating teams are required to code for two or more than two bots as stated in problem statement which will be released at the time when the event starts. For the run, bots will be provided by Organizing Team of NSSC. Judging Parameters, Arena Specification and Bot Specification will be released with the release of Problem Statement.
